National Junior Honor Society
The Greene School is pleased to offer Middle School students an opportunity for national recognition as a member school of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS).
NJHS is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle-school level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship–characteristics that have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
Students in grades seven and eight who attain a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher and are in good academic and behavioral standing are encouraged to submit an application for membership. Applications are reviewed by a faculty committee to ensure each applicant meets The Greene School chapter’s membership criteria, which are based on NJHS’s five pillars:
Scholarship
Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher and be in good academic standing.Service
This involves voluntary contributions to the school and greater community, done without compensation.Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record. (Disciplinary records are reviewed and considered in the NJHS evaluation process.)Citizenship
The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic engagement; has high regard for freedom and justice; respects democracy; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and federal levels; and participates responsibly in activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs.
It is estimated that more than one million students participate in official NJHS activities. Chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Students ultimately selected for membership in The Greene School’s chapter of NJHS are required to attend monthly meetings and to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service per year. In addition, they are expected to serve as role models and mentors for their peers, and as ambassadors for the school.
